Without football, who am I? I wasn't ready to retire

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the top scorer in the Serie A and leads with an unbeaten Milan at 39. Interviewed on 'Sky Sport', the Swede again acknowledged that he thought about his retirement, both in the summer and after a big injury at United in 2017, but he wasn't prepared for it.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic smelled something because instead of retiring, he remained at Milan and now his team are top and unbeaten. Meanwhile, he is the current top scorer with 10 goals in just 6 games and only two from the penalty spot.

But it all could have changed 3 years ago. Interviewed by his ex-teammate Massimo Ambrosini on 'Sky Sport', the Swedish forward acknowledged that an injury with Manchester United in 2017 was about to end his career. His determination was key to his return.

"After the injury, I told myself that I should continue as long as I could hold out. Without football, who am I? When you don't do what you've done for 25 years, it's not easy. Am I ready to retire? No, because I feel too good", Zlatan said.

And like he has already said more times, Ibrahimovic could have hung up his boots this summer: "Pioli asked me what I wanted to do. I answered: 'No, I'm not going to continue. That's enough. My family is important too, I'm here alone. It's a sacrifice. Six months is fine, but I don't want to stay another year'. Pioli told me: 'It's OK, I respect you, it's OK".

However, there was something that moved inside him to continue: "The next day we spoke again. No, I have decided to retire. Forget the contract, at this age it's not important', I told him. Then something changed, I didn't want to regret it. I called Milan and decided to continue. But at first I told myself 'no, I won't stay next year".
