2013 German Super Cup, the birth of a rivalry
It all began on July 27 2013 as Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich faced off in the German Super Cup. The game was Guardiola's first in charge of the Bavarians, but it was Klopp who claimed the victory by four goals to two.
Nip and tuck in the 2013-14 Bundesliga
Guardiola looked to be on his way to helping Bayern forget their Super Cup defeat as they saw off Dortmund 3-0 at the Westfalenstadion, only for Klopp and Dortmund to reply in kind with a 3-0 win of their own at the Allianz Arena.
Guardiola claims the DFB Pokal as Klopp wins another Super Cup
Bayern finished that season by doing a Bundesliga and DFB Pokal double. The Cup final saw Bayern and Dortmund face off once again and it was Guardiola's team who claimed the trophy with a 2-0 win. Klopp returned the favour soon afterwards though, winning the Super Cup by the same scoreline.
The rivalry continues in England
Almost two years went by before the two managers faced each other once again. However, things remained the same. Klopp won the first meeting 1-0 on New Year's Eve 2016, with the second ending in a draw. The following season (this season) saw Klopp's men on the receiving end of a 5-0 thumping at Anfield, before they replied by inflicting City's only league defeat of the season so far af the Etihad, emerging 4-3 winners in a thriller.
