Mata's left-foot effort was his eighth goal direct from a free-kick in the Premier League since he made his debut for Chelsea in August 2011.
In that same period, no other player has been able to match Mata's tally.
Gylfi Sigurdsson is the closest with seven, followed by Wayne Rooney, Christian Eriksen and former Norwich player Robert Snodgrass who are all tied on six.
However, Mata still has a way to go to equal the all time greats when it come to dead-ball goals.
United legend David Beckham is top of the pile with 18 goals.
The next best are a massive six goals behind, with Thierry Henry and Gianfranco Zola having 12 apiece to their names.
