With just one win in 16 Premier League home games, Hughes moved training to St Mary's this week in a bid to shake things up.
"The home form is continuing to not allow us to have a season. It has to change. 16-odd games is a ridiculous stat, to be honest," he said.
Asked if it felt like a cup final, he said: "Maybe we want it to be like that. Because then we'll have that edge to our game that's it's always important to have."
Southampton have never failed to win any of their first six home games in a single season in the top four tiers, but Hughes isn't pushing the panic button.
"Going into the weekend I think we need to do something about the situation we find ourselves in. It's not a dire situation. It's nowhere near that situation.
"We're not in the bottom three. But clearly it's a situation we want to turn around and make better."
