Valencia met Marseille in the 2004 UEFA Cup final at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg and the Spanish side, captained by David Albelda, won the trophy.
Rafa Benitez'as men took the lead on the stroke of half-time when referee Pierluigi Collina awarded Valencia a penalty. Fabien Barthez in the Marseille goal was sent off and Vicente converted it. Then, 13 minutes into the second half, Mista doubled their lead to kill off the contest. This was Valencia's first major European trophy in 24 years. That season, Valencia also won La Liga and were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
