Deportivo took on Albacete on Saturday in a promotion play-off final to try and get into Spain's second tier. The Galicians had the advantage of playing the match at home as the Riazor was one of the pre-selected venues for the play-offs while they only needed a draw to get promoted due to their higher league position.
The Riazor was packed to the rafters and the hosts took the lead when Soriano scored after 26 minutes. Then, in the 82nd minute Alberto headed home a free-kick to level the scores and the game went to extra-time. Albacete had to score in extra-time and Jordi Sanchez's header in the 113th minute gave Albacete the goal they needed. Deportivo tried to find a leveller, but were unable to find one. Deportivo now must spend a third season in Spain's third tier (Primera RFEF) while Albacete return to Segunda at the first time of asking. Andorra, Racing Santander and Villarreal B are the other teams to be promoted from Spain's new third tier.
