The Italian midfielder saw a second yellow card of the night in the 66th minute of the game, and was sent walking back to the changing rooms, leaving his team with ten men.
He received his first booking in the first half, after lunging in on Madrid goalscorer Casemiro in a challenge that was deemed unaccpetable by Felix Brych.
Then, in the second half, the midfielder let out an angry tirade at the referee after believing he was fouled. His abuse towards the official did him no good, however, and he was shown a second yellow for dissent.
It was Verratti's third red card in his Champions League career, and left his side with little chance of completing the comeback they so desperately needed.
