Fleetwood Town chairman, Andy Pilley, recalled the Leicester City star's spell at the club and how several managers monitored his performance a decade ago. Hodgson thought that he wasn't that good.

The story of Jamie Vardy's improvement is still one of the most powerful of the 21st century. He went from being an unknown in the English lower leagues to a Premier League star and commanding the England attack alongside Harry Kane.

However, Roy Hodgson, who called him up to the squad, wasn't so confident of his potential in 2012. Back then, the striker played for Fleetwood Town and numerous sides followed him every week.

"There were games where I went to the box and there were up to six or seven Premier League and Championship managers next to me," recalled Andy Pilley, the team's chairman, in a podcast.

The Fleetwood supremo isn't forgetting Roy Hodgson's words: "I remember going to Kidderminster's ground. I sat next to Roy Hodgson, who was the manager of West Brom at the time. During the game he told me: 'Yes, he's good, but not that good'".

Then, the veteran manager called him up to the England squad and had to backtrack on this statement, as he took the current Leicester player to the Euros.
