Raphael Varane was the man who opened the scoring in the match between Real Madrid and Espanyol thanks to a pass by Benzema. Two Frenchmaen combined inside the box for the defender to beat Diego Lopez with his left foot. It was a striker's finish.

Real Madrid were not playing brilliantly at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Zidane's men clinical finishing put them ahead. The player who put them in front was a man whose main job is to defend. He displayed his attacking qualities on this occasion though.

With a bit of fortune, Benzema won the ball just inside the box and he saw Casemiro on his own. He passed the ball to him, but Varane was in a better position so the midfielder let the ball run through to the Frenchman so that he could beat Diego Lopez with his left foot

The finish was quiet good and, in the celebration, he put his hand on the club crest. A clear sign of the fact he cares about the club. Shortly afterwards, there was controversy over a possible red which Vinicius did not see. The referee decided not to show the Brazilian a second yellow card

It was Varane's first goal this season, although it is true that he has already given an assist. Last term, he netted twice in his 43 appearances.
