The Technical Committee of Referees of the Spanish Football Federation gave a press conference to analyse the use of video arbitration in La Liga for the second season and surprised with their statements.
"VAR has made some mistakes that everybody has seen, we have to recognise that VAR has made some mistakes and we also have to recognise that VAR has entered this season in some passages of plays that were not clear and evident", surprised Carlos Velasco Carballo, president of the CTA.
"VAR is a new source of content for the media. We now have two controversies, the referee and VAR. It seems that a system is criticised when in fact VAR is criticised for free", he continued.
Similarly, Velasco Carballo warned that passages of play that had been refereeing successes have been scandalised: "It is happening that evident refereeing successes and evident VAR successes are becoming errors. Those errors are becoming criticisms and from those criticisms of VAR we are turning it into a scandal".
On the other hand, the president of the CTA, a former referee, said that there has been more success than in previous seasons and recalled that nobody is perfect: "This season, we have had the highest rate of refereeing success in the history of Spanish football. Neither our referees are perfect nor VAR is perfect nor football is perfect. We have to be self-critical, but in an objective way".
Velasco Carballo concluded with a message to all levels of football. "Spanish referees are among the best in the world. I will not allow the knowledge of the referees to be doubted. VAR is a tool that helps and that between all we must improve. To doubt that it is helping football is not to see the reality".
