Video Assistant Referees (VAR) could be introduced in the knockout phases of the Champions League.

After it was introduced in to the World CUp, and some of the major European domestic leagues, many were surprised when VAR was not included in the Champions League this season by UEFA.

However, the European footballing governing body are now reportedly interested in fast-tracking its integration in to the competition in 2019, accroding to the 'BBC'.

Mistakes such as the awarding of a penalty when Raheem Sterling tripped over the turf in Man City's game against Shaktar Donetsk on Wednesday night, which the player himself admitted was not a foul, could be avoided if the technology were introduced.

UEFA are working hard to educate match officials on how to use the VAR so that it could be used in the knockout stages of the organisation's flagship club competition in time.

A decision on this issue could be made at the organisation's next executive committee meeting, which will take place at the start of December.
