The Dutch defender has been linked with a move to Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool, but his manager insists he will stay.

Southampton manager Claude Puel insists defender Virgil van Dijk will remain at the club despite being linked with a January move.

Van Dijk, 25, has been linked to Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain after some impressive performances for the Saints.

However, the Premier League side are expected to hold out for upwards of £50 million for the centre-back.

Puel has no plans to allow the Netherlands international to leave, though, insisting he will remain put for a few more years.

"For Virgil, the price would be the same in two or three years and he can stay two or three years with us," he told a news conference on Friday.

"He's an important player for us, for the team, with a good spirit.

"For me, also, with Jose Fonte and Steven Davis, he is a captain of the team because he has a good personality, strong character, quality.

"He's an important player for us and of course he will stay with us".

Van Dijk has been in fine form for Southampton, who sit seventh in the table and face Tottenham on Monday, after his move from Celtic.

The ex-Groningen star has played every minute of Premier League football and has worn the captain's armband on occasion.

He is contracted to the St Mary's outfit until June 2022.
