UK government considering suspending Premier League due to coronavirus

The coronavirus and the crisis that accompanies it is having an effect on sports competitions. In Italy, they have already announced that matches will be played behind closed doors, something that already happened in the Inter v Ludogorets Europa League match, and the UK could go beyond that.

Both 'The Telegraph' and 'The Times' said on Friday that the British government are considering suspending all sporting events in the country because of the spreading of the disease, where there has already been 15 confirmed cases.

For now, there is no certainty, it is only a scenario of the authorities, but this implies that the current Premier League campaign could be suspended before its end.

In case measures are taken, there also exists the alternative that Javier Tebas plans about La Liga, and that is playing matches entirely behind closed doors.

However, if the league is ended now, the aforementioned source assures that everything that happened in the first half of the season would be annulled. I.e. Liverpool might even lose the title.

You don't just have to think about the winner, but also the teams that are currently fighting for survival or Europe. The suspension of matches would be a problem on a general level for next season.

For the time being, clubs such as Newcastle have already communicated measures to prohibit their players from shaking hands, a gesture that has been a tradition before every training session.
