If the Assembly approve the new format spearheaded by Rubailes, the Copa del Rey will end up being played over one leg until the semi-finals with the lower ranked team at home.
Teams from La Liga, Segunda, Segunda B, Tercera and even from Regional (Spain's fifth tier) will enter the competition from the first round. Regarding the Spanish Super Cup, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) will expand in the coming years into a 'Final Four' format which will take place in January and outside Spain. This new format for the Super Cup, whose last edition was in Tangiers, was first released by 'COPE'.
It is important to point out that according to the RFEF, the lower division sides' stadia must meet minimum requirements. If they do not, they will not be able to host matches in the competition.
The RFEF said as "an exception", the teams which qualify for the Spanish Super Cup in January will join the Copa del Rey at the last 32 stage."
Since he took over as president, Rubiales championed a change in the Copa del Rey which in recent years has lost interest for teams and above all fans. Furthermore, the calendar will have less games and the players will get more rest.
"Both initiatives mean an important reduction of matches in the calendar in the coming seasons and will have to be approved on 29th April at the extraordinary general assembly which wil take place in the Federation's HQ," says the statement.
