We will need a few weeks to see how the teams are, but thanks to ProFootballDB, we can see which players were the most tired prior to the pandemic. And the conclusion is clearly that Barca were desperate for the break.
The seven players to have had least rest are all at Barcelona. We are talking about the number of competitive matches for club and country played by La Liga footballers in the last five years. Precisely from 14th March 2015 until the state of emergency was called in Spain. And that is counting the month's holiday they all get.
Antoine Griezmann has only had 5.24 days rest between games. He has made 64 appearances for France and 256 club games for a total of 25.882 minutes. That is without counting all the travel so he is sure to be more fresh now.
Ivan Rakitic is the second most tired at 5.57 days on average in these last five years. Who knows whether he could have been ahead of Griezmann had he played at the beginning of this season under Ernesto Valverde. He has played 301 games, an average of 60.2 per year.
Leo Messi has 25,000 minutes in the last five years, 5.64 days per encounter. 255 for Barca and 42 for Argentina. Now, after three months without football, on the one hand, there is the doubt over whether he could get injured, but also the rest will have done him good.
Sergio Busquets (5.7 days), Arturo Vidal, Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez (6.05, 6.09 and 6.09) are the next three in the list are the others with less than a week's rest.
Diego Simeone's main men
They are Koke and Saul and they are eighth and ninth. We are talking about two big players under Simeone so it shouldn't surprise us. Their importance in the Spanish national side has meant they have played many matches: 272 and 269 respectively. It is worth remembering they also cover a lot of ground and they have a rest period of just 6.16 and 6.23 days per year.
Sergio Ramos is 18th in the list (6.6 days) so that could surprise some. Kroos in 11th and Modric 17th are the Real Madrid players ahead of him. They have played on 264 and 255 occasions respectively.
You have to go to 13th position to find a player at a La Liga club from outside Real, Barca or Atletico. It is Ever Banega with 18,755 minutes at a game every 6.4 days while Wu Lei is in 15th.
Curiously, Ismael of Betis, but on loan at Alaves is the player to have played the least in La Liga as he rests every 93.11 days. German Valera of Atletico (79.81>) and Thierry Correia (72.87) are next. Correia was signed for Valencia by Jorge Mendes and he was a flop. Out of the top clubs, Ansu Fati is the freshest at 50.79 days rest. 1557 minutes in 33 encounters.
