Having two world class goalkeepers is a problem in situations like these. Joachim Low stood his ground, Neuer still starts for him but Germany has started to doubt his decision. Matthaus, legend of Teutonic football, admitted publically that Ter Stegen has certainly "won his opportunity fairly".
But the German coach has other ideas and chose Neuer to start against Serbia. Ter Stegen had his moment in the second half, and when the time came, the keepers crossed paths making way for a photo to be taken that is now circulating around Germany.
Neither looked at the other. Nor the typical handshake that players exchange upon entering and exiting the field of play. Two compatriots. Absolutely nothing. And so, emerges a controversial image which suggests that, beyond Low's decision, the two don't have a good relationship.
On a sporting level, it was Ter Stegen who beat Neuer after the latter let in the only Serbian goal. It was a close-range Jovic header, but for the moment, the German coach is not worried too much. The German is his goalkeeper.
