For years, Victor Valdes was irreplaceable at Barcelona and became one of the best goalkeepers in Spain. However, his position was never out of the question.
In his early years, the goalkeeper found it hard to silence criticism and for a time it was thought that Barcelona needed to sign a better player in his position.
The former goalkeeper spoke about those difficult times on social media, and showed the only shirt from his time as a footballer that he keeps, the one from the final of the Paris Champions League in 2006.
"The only thing I keep from my time under clubs, outside of what my memory comes to remember ... Eternally grateful for your messages these last days. #Paris2006", said the goalkeeper, who accompanied his words with a framed photo of the final's shirt.
"That night gave me the strength to stay with Barcelona for many more years, without that game I might not have lasted so long. I overcame the criticism," concluded a player who was decisive for Barcelona that day and saved several clear-cut chances against Thierry Henry.
