Athletic Bilbao won at the new San Mames in their opening game there back on 16th September 2013 in a 3-2 win over Celta Vigo. As is usual for Athletic Bilbao, they made the ground a fortress until Atletico came along.
The Basques went 12 home games without losing that season (10 wins and two draws). But at the end of January 2014, that unbeaten run was ended in a Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg tie.
Atletico Madrid visited San Mames after winning 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon. Aduriz put the Basques ahead in the 42nd minute, but Raul Garcia levelled things up after the interval.
The scoreline was sending Atletico through and Athletic had to take risks as they needed two. Simeone's men weathered the storm in a season which saw them win La Liga and reach the final of the Champions League.
And in one of his few opportunities, Costa got the ball and beat Herrerin in the one on one situation. Bilbao were knocked out of the cup and that was their first defeat in their stadium.
'Los Leones' remained unbeaten in the league for another few weeks until Espanyol beat them on 16th February 2014. Shortly afterwards, Atletico won again at the ground, this time in La Liga. Costa starred once again.
Atletico are looking to fight back in the last 11 matchdays to get into the Champions League. They have lots of examples of it being done in the past by themselves. The 2014 Atletico Madrid is one of them. All of it will begin at San Mames.
