It was a big controversy. At that time, Hazard was a great young talent for Belgian football, but he was far from the star he is now. Therefore, his gesture was seen as an insult to the national team many started to doubt him. It occurred in a clash against Turkey in 2011. Eden was subbed off in the 60th minute and while the game was still going on, he left the ground to go an eat a hamburger which a few members of his family who had come to see him. He was hit with a two match ban for this incident.
However, now, eight years after the event and now a key member of the Belgian squad, 'Burgergate' is now nothing more than a funny anecdote. In fact, Hazard assured that it helped to become more well-known in Belgium.
"That hamburger which I ate converted me into a national team legend," he stated while laughing in an interview for 'RTBF', in which he also talked about the burger itself: "That sauce was my favourite one. I sometimes tell my Mum to bring me it when she comes to London. What I did was stupid, but we still laugh when we remember it."
As well as the cited anecdote, Hazard also spoke about his next game for Belgium, his 100th. "I haven't set myself any goal. I will play for as long as my body lets me, but if I see a young player who can take my position and substitute me, I will leave. I am young and I think Courtois will beat my record. I might do a Buffon and play until I'm 40... I think I try and carry on while Thibaut is still playing," he commented in a jocular tone.
