The match between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal was full of tension. Referee Soto Grado wrote in the match report that there was an "argument" which could have turned very ugly at the Wanda.
"After the end of the match, while we were in the tunnel, we witnessed an argument between coaching staff and players from both teams," the referee said in his match report.
"In the argument, we saw Villarreal's assistant coach, Imanol Idiakez Barkaiztegi, confront a board member of the home team and shout at him in an aggressive manner while being pulled away from members of his team.
"We also witnessed another incident where a person from the home team identified by the authorities as Pedro Tomas Renones Crego, Atletico Madrid's team manager, hit a member of the away team's coaching staff in the mouth with his hand," the match official concluded.
The match ended 2-2 after a frenetic finish which saw Atletico salvage a point at the death thanks to a comical own goal. It was a very unsavoury end to what was a great football match.
