Suarez played the full 90 minutes of Barca's shock 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday, which ended their hopes of reaching the Champions League final.
But the club announced on Thursday that Suarez needed an operation through a statement that read: "Luis Suarez has an internal meniscal injury to the right knee and will be subjected today to an arthroscopy," although the initial sugery had to be delayed due to clashes in the Uruguayan player's schedule.
Since, Barcelona have now confirmed that he will not be available for the club's next engagements, which leaves him out of the Copa del Rey final on the 25th of May, and the two remaining La Liga matches.
Ernesto Valverde's side have already been crowned champions and could seal consecutive domestic doubles by beating Valencia, even if it is unlikely to make amends for the collapse against Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Luis Suarez will be focusing on his recovery, as his season with the club might be over, but his national team of Uruguay qualified for the Copa America and will be expecting one of their star players to be fit and ready to go. And with the tournament starting on the 14th of June in Brazil, he will have to be making a quick recovery.
Spanish sports newspaper "AS" has claimed that the recovery period should be of a month and a half, which means the Uruguayan would completely miss the group stages, where his national team will have to beat Ecuador, Japan and Chile to make it through safely. Assuming Uruguay goes through, Suarez could be availiable for the quarter finals, programmed for the 28th and 29th of June, which would fall around 49 or 50 days after his surgery. No confirmation has been released yet, which means nothing is set in stone, but his participation in the Copa America is clearly on shaky ground.
Suarez has not had much luck with his national team, as he has frequently been injured for international tournaments, and has been involved in a string of scandals, most famously, biting a player for the 3rd time in his career during the 2014 World Cup.
