England winger Raheem Sterling enhanced an already impressive first half display by adding City's fourth goal to send the champions into the interval with a commanding 4-1 lead.
Brilliant build up play from the hosts set Sergio Aguero scampering after the ball towards the by line. And, following a brief battle with 'Saints' full back Cédric, the Argentine looked to pick out a teammate in the middle of the box.
As is customary during his time under the tutelage of manager Guardiola, Sterling had made a dart to the back post in anticipation of the cross. But when it did not arrive, he was clever to move further into the box, to find himself in a perfect place to receive the ball.
Striker Aguero spotted the run of Sterling and fired a low pass to the Englishman's feet.
After an initial miscontrolling of the ball, Sterling managed to sort out his feet, trick his way around an advancing Southampton defender, before firing low into the bottom corner of the visitors net.
This goal capped off a memorable first period performance from the reigning champions, who had secured a quick-fire commanding lead, scoring 3 goals within the first twenty minutes of the game.
In terms of Sterling's own display, the goal marked his first of the afternoon; and when added to the assist that he registered for the opener, the Englishman will sure have made an impression on International manager Gareth Southgate watching on from the stands.
