Raheem Sterling capped a fine individual performance by grabbing his second goal of the game, as City handed out a footballing lesson to Southampton at the Etihad.
In a combination which worked so well in the first half, striker Sergio Aguero was on hand once more to provide the assist for the Englishman.
The move started in the middle of the field, a quick exchange between Sterling and Bernardo Silva, created space for striker Aguero to receive the ball.
Much like the build up for his first half strike, Sterling set off into the channel in anticipation of a through ball pass.
Aguero obliged; sliding a pass into the space vacated by the scrambling Southampton defence, in front of the advancing Sterling.
At a narrow angle, Sterling was clever in his approach to the finish, opting to drive a low effort between the legs of the covering 'Saints' stopper Alex McCarthy.
The shot was too powerful and accurate, and it flew past the Southampton keeper before he had the chance to block, smacking into the far bottom corner of the net.
The brace helped Sterling to reach a goal scoring landmark for the champions; 50 goals in the sky blue of City, a great return for the £49 million they bought him for just three years ago, which must feel like an absolute bargain now.
Sterling's display was typical of his assured performances under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, with a clinical edge and a great eye for a pass, he would finish the ecounter with 2 goals and 2 assists to his name.
And so after such a star role in the 'Citizens' win, the club hierarchy may want to move quicker in order to tie down the England man for the long term, before Spanish giants Real Madrid manage to pry him away from Manchester.
