Southgate led England to an incredible World Cup semi-final over the summer, with young players and an emphasis on attractive football which has not always been the English way.
However, the short-comings of the England squad were laid bare in the Nations League defeat to Spain, with a creative midfielder desperately in need.
James Maddison is a player who could fill that void, having had an excellent start to life as a Premier League player with Leicester, registering three goals and an assist so far this season.
His Leicester colleague Ben Chilwell was given his England debut earlier in September, and will also be monitored in the game against Newcastle.
The home side are unlikely to be of a lot of interest for Southgate, although Jonjo Shelvey is another player that many have said could provide the creative spark the 'Three Lions' need.
