Southampton demand £15m for Fonte
According to the 'Daily Mail', sources close to Jose Mourinho believed that the Southampton skipper would be available for as little as £5m, given that the Portuguese defender only has 18 months to run on his contract and is relatively old in footballing terms, at 32 years old.
However, Mourinho's allies are wide of the mark in their valuation of Fonte, who would command a transfer fee of £15m in order to swap the south coast for the north west.
Speculation recently increased, when Fonte posted on Instagram saying that he had not been offered a new contract, despite having just over a year to run on his current deal.
Southampton manager Claude Puel also failed to use the Portugal international at all in the Saints' Europa League campaign, something which came as a great surprise.
However, Puel played down the significance of Fonte's absence from Southampton's Europa League campaign and ensured fans that their captain remains an important player for the club.
It therefore seems that Fonte's future remains up in the air. The only thing we can be sure of, is that this probably won't be the end of transfer rumours surrounding the defender's future.
