Southampton have agreed to pay £16 million for Basel forward Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The Norwegian international will join the Saints soon according to Sky Sports, with personal terms and a medical still to be finalised.

The player made 45 appearances for the Swiss team last season, scoring on 14 occasions including twice in the Champions League.

Elyounoussi can play as a wide or central forward, and therefore is thought to be replacing Dusan Tadic at St Mary's. The Serbian has made his intention to leave the club clear, with negotiations for a £18 million move to Ajax thought to be at an advanced stage.

Southampton narrowly escaped relegation from the Premier League last season, with Mark Hughes managing to inspire a late resurgence to ensure that the club would retain their top-flight status.

The club have also confirmed the signing of Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong on a four-year deal.
