All eyes were on Germany as football was finally played in one of the top 5 leagues for the first time in 2 months. Leipzig, in 3rd, faced a tricky match against Freiburg who had their own ambitions to try and qualify for next season's Europa League.
Leipzig started the game brightly when Leimer had a shot that went just wide. A few minutes later Adams had a shot saved by Schwolow as it looked like the hosts would comfortablly win the match. The Freiburg keeper was again the man as he saved from Leipzig's star player Werner.
The game had a preseason feel about it due to the lack of fans, and Leipzig could be forgiven for perhaps still not finding that killer touch that they had before football was grounded to a halt because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 34th minute, the visitors had their first shot on target and it ended in a goal.
Grifo swung the corner in and the ball hit the back of Gulde's leg and past the helpless Gulacsi to plunge the Red Bull Arena into silence, quite literally!!! A few shots here and there with Gunter almost scoring Freiburg's second, and the away side led at the interval.
Leipzig brought on Lookman to add some more firepower up top. He hadn't scored a goal this season in the Bundesliga and you could tell why. After a couple of chances for the hosts, the ex-Everton man missed a sitter and put it wide after Kampl's cross left him with just the keeper to beat in acres of space.
Leipzig battered Freiburg for the next 20 minutes before they finally had something to show for their efforts. Kampl put in a lovely delivery for Poulsen who headed past Schwolow to make it 1-1. Leipzig then huffed and puffed as they tried to find a second, but Freiburg almost won it in injury time.
A free-kick came to the back post, Hoeler headed it back across goal and Koch put it in. However, VAR adjudged Freiburg to be offside. Some things never change...
A decent point for Freiburg, with Leipzig being made to rue their missed chances. Moenchengladbach could leapfrog Leipzig into 3rd with a win later on Saturday evening, while Freiburg are up to 7th.
