The 74-year-old Scot managed Manchester United for 26 years, winning 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cup trophies and two Champions League trophies, among other titles.
Ferguson picked up the award in Nuremberg on Friday night and said that his achievements were "unique".
"I think to last 39 years as a coach is unique and also that the people I worked with bought into the work ethic I had, I think that was important," Sir Alex Ferguson said upon winning the award.
The Walther Bensemann award is in honour of Bensemann, who founded German sports magazine 'Kicker'.
