Two goals in six games would not be a concern for the vast majority of strikers in world football, even more so when its two in four in the Premier League. However Harry Kane has set himself such high standards that he is facing criticism for his start to the season.
His start to the Premier League season has not been disastrous by any means with well taken goals against Fulham and Manchester United. However he has missed more chances than usual and his contribution to build up play has been below par. Having had little rest over 3 years does he need some time to recover physically and mentally?
Gareth Southgate needlessly brought him on in the Friendly win over Switzerland and whilst he defended his decision to do so and refuted claims of burnout, the Sky Sports pundits speaking after the game did not agree.
Some have said Kane needs a long period of time away from football, Jamie Redknapp did not go to these lengths but did say he could follow in the path of other top players: '' I looked at Cristiano Ronaldo this week and he's on a holiday with his family. Whether it's a week or just five or so days, it's just that break away from it.'' Redknapp believed this should have happened during the International break saying: ''What are we going to learn by playing him? We know Harry Kane is a great player,", he said on 'Sky Sports'.
Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher agreed, saying he thought Kane looked tired and suggesting he needed a mental break as much as a physical one ''Sometimes that comes from physical tiredness but also mental tiredness and you are not quite there. I agree, I think it is an accumulation of games.''
Alex Scott echoed the thoughts of Carragher saying that those that don´t play the game would find it hard to understand and perhaps Kane doesn´t know himself either, the former England women player stating:''Maybe he doesn't even know. He's probably frustrated in himself with his performances but it is just that mental fatigue as to why he needs a mental break, and he will come back better and fresher.''
Cleary the pundits believe he should get a rest but this seems very unlikely with the upcoming Premier League match against Liverpool and Champions League fixture against Inter.
