The penalty which saw Gerard Moreno level the scores for Villarreal and Real Madrid has caused some controversy. Replays show that Moreno's teammate Samu was already inside the box when the penalty was taken. We explained why the VAR did not order a retake.

Real Madrid dropped two points in their away clash at La Ceramica. Real Madrid were the better team in the first half, but Villarreal fought back and Gerard Moreno got a leveller for the hosts from the penalty spot.

Although the penalty incident was clear as Courtois brought down Samu Chukwueze, there was anger on social media as some people felt the spot kick should have been retaken.

And the thing is that when Gerard Moreno took the spot kick, Samu was already in the box despite the fact Hernandez Hernandez was trying to stop the players going into the box.

In the image, it is clear that the Villarreal footballer is in the box when the spot kick was taken, but as he did not have a direct influence on the penalty, the VAR did not order a retake.
