Real Madrid scored to make it 2-0 just after the interval against Deportivo Alaves. Karim Benzema assisted Marco Asensio, but the linesman raised the flag. Hector Rodriguez Carpallo, who replaced Gil Manzano at half-time, gave the goal after a VAR intervention.

Real Madrid hosted Deportivo Alaves on matchday 35 in La Liga, the antepenultimate one before the season ends.

Joselu and Lucas Perez could have put the Basques in front early on, but Real Madrid took the lead after Mendy was fouled by Ximo Navarro. Karim Benzema, who got Real Madrid's 500th goal under Zinedine Zidane, scored the penalty.

Before play resumed after the interval, the referee Gil Manzano had to be replaced by Hector Rodriguez Carpallo, a Segunda B referee. The replacement official got his first taste of VAR within five minutes.

Karim Benzema received the ball in space, he waited for the right moment and he gave the ball to his left for the unmarked Asensio to tap in.

The lineman raised his flag as he thought the Frenchman was offside, but after a VAR review, the Segunda B referee gave the goal.
