An important part of Ramadan is fasting. Between sunrise and sunset, practising Muslims may not eat or drink, as a mark of their commitment.
Obviously, for professional athletes, this can have some ramifications, but reports out of Egypt are saying that neither Mo Salah nor Sadio Mane have any plans to break their fast early before the game.
Sunset in Kiev should come at around 8:53pm local time, with kickoff due at 9.45pm, meaning that even with the fast the players should have some time to get some nutrition in and re-hydrate ahead of the big game.
Ramadan ends on June 14th, the same day that Egypt begin their World Cup campaign, and the national team coaches are already taking measures to ensure their players can observe Ramadan and arrive at the tournament in top shape.
Senegal, Mane's home nation, do not have their first game until June 19th, so he will be unaffected by the time kickoff comes.
The fast also comes as little worry to Salah's team mates. Alberto Moreno was particularly jovial when asked about it by 'El Transistor': "I think Salah trains at 20 per cent because he’s scared of injuring himself. Now it’s Ramadan, I’ll eat and drink for him, that’s something I can do!"
