Having both already qualified, Monday afternoon brought a top-of-the-table clash between Uruguay and Russia, with the two teams making seven changes between them ahead of the knockouts.
The hosts had a fantastic sea of support which was defeaning in the opening minutes but they couldn't prevent their nation going behind in the 10th minute.
Luis Suarez stepped up to take the free-kick and spotted a gap emerging to his right, hitting a bullet shot right into the bottom corner to give 'La Celeste' a 1-0 lead.
Russia nearly struck back with an equaliser right away. A long ball over-the-top was brought down by Denis Cheryshev, who then hit a venemous shot at goal. Fernando Muslera did well to get his body in the way.
The save would prove crucial as Uruguay found their second breakthrough in the 23rd minute, thanks to some bad luck for the hosts.
A Russian head tried to clear the corner but it fell to Diego Laxalt just outside the area who decided to let rip. It took a wicked deflection off Cheryshev, wrong-footing goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, who couldn't keep the ball from rifling into the back of the net.
It was Uruguayan domination by that point with the hosts capìtulating in front of their very supporters' eyes, culminating in a sending off for Igor Smolnikov.
Having been booked just seven minutes earlier, Smolnikov took out Laxalt from behind, leaving the referee no choice but to brandish another yellow.
There was no way back for Russia from that point. The game meandered to half-time with a 2-0 lead for Uruguay and you knew it would follow a similar theme in the second.
It did just that till the final 10 minutes, when the match suddenly came back to life, with some final chances for the South American side.
Suarez and Edinson Cavani were two-on-one with a Russian defender, charging at goal. The Barcelona forward tried to find his team-mate with a side pass but overcooked it, leaving Cavani still on zero goals for the tournament.
He finally broke that duck though in the 90th minute, from another set-piece. A corner was whipped in from the right. Diego Godin rose the highest but sent his header straight at Akifeev. Unfortunately for Russia, Cavani was there to tap home the rebound and finish off Russia's miserable afternoon.
The result means Uruguay finish in first position in Group A, while the hosts have to settle for second. Who they will face will depend on the games in Group B later with Spain, Portugal and Iran all vying for two positions.
