Italian newspaper 'Gazzetto dello Sport' is reporting that the Gabon international is seen as the ideal replacement for skipper Icardi, who has been heavily linked with moves to Napoli and Arsenal.
The 27-year-old has scored 80 goals in 143 games for the Bundesliga runners-up and was recently linked with a move to Manchester City.
However, Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel recently said that the striker is not for sale, meaning that it would probably take a huge offer to tempt Dortmund into letting one of their key men leave the club.
