The England captain has struggled for form of late with club and country and was benched by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho. Now, Rooney is expected to be dropped to the bench by interim England manager Gareth Southgate.
Rooney had another disappointing game in a deep-lying midfield role on Saturday when England faced Malta. The Manchester United and England skipper was also booed by his own fans before and during the game, something which Southgate condemned.
However, when the former England U-21 and Middlesbrough manager became interim manager, he categorically confirmed that Rooney would start against Malta and that he would remain as captain. Despite this, it appears that Southgate has been underwhelmed by the United man and he therefore won't start against Slovenia.
It is not known who will come in for the 30-year-old, but it is hard to see a way back for England's all-time top goalscorer should his replacement perform well.
