The eagerly-awaited clash between these two heavyweights began with the hosts on the front foot, cheered on by an intimidating atmosphere at the Allianz Arena.
Without creating clear chances, Bayern took control of the match with all their passing going through Thiago. Real Madrid fought back and managed to take back the ball, enjoying the best chance of the game when a Benzema header came back off the crossbar, an inch or two away from putting the visitors up.
It was, however, the hosts that took the lead. In one of the many corner kicks they had in the opening minutes, a powerful header from Vidal proved unstoppable for Navas, to the home crowd's delight.
It was end-to-end football from then on and Bayern had the chance to double their lead after they were awarded a penalty for a Carvajal handball in the box. Vidal, who seemed confident after his opening goal, fired his effort over the bar.
After the brake Real Madrid surprised the hosts with a great move which saw Carvajal drilling the ball into the box for Ronaldo to finish past Neuer with a first-time touch. Going from a potential two-goal lead to a 1-1 draw was a shock for the Germans who took a step back and allowed Real to come forward.
Zidane's side were relieved after getting an away goal, and would be alleviated further after Javi Martinez picked up two yellow cards in minutes for the home side to be reduced to ten men.
Madrid quickly took control as they tried to take advantage of momentum, they piled on the chances against a side who seemed broken, but Neuer pulled off some outstanding saves.
Finally, an inch-perfect ball from Asensio found Ronaldo in the box, for the Portuguese striker to poke the ball under Neuer. The goalkeeper will be disappointed with that goal after such a fine display, but Ronaldo was ecstatic to get his 100th European goal.
Bayern will believe they could have come away with more after missing the first-half spot kick, and Martinez's dismissal was definitely a catalyst. Madrid have a slight advantage going into the second leg, but there is still all to play for.
