A spell of Real Madrid pressure was swiftly reversed in the form of a rapid counter attack by visitors Levante.
Upon reaching the edge of the hosts' penalty area, Levante attempted to play their way into the area, but were stopped, seemingly by the arm of centre-half Raphael Varane.
Immediately the officials awarded the visitors a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Levante players began protesting the decision, insisting that the incident had occurred inside the area, but the referee stood firm.
However, just as the visitors were about to take the set-piece, a review from the assistant officials in the VAR control centre, insured that the decision was overturned in favor of a penalty for Levante.
Upon second reviewing, as showed in the official video review made by the VAR officials, it was clear that the ball had indeed connected with the right arm of Frenchman Raphael Varane inside his own penalty area.
The responsibility for the spot-kick fell to centre -forward Marti Roger ,to be taken directly in front of the Madrid Ultras behind the goal of home stopper Thibaut Courtois.
However the forward remained composed, and after asteady run up, despatched the penalty to the right hand bottom corner of the net.
There was nothing Madrid keeper Courtois could do, as even though he guessed the correct direction of the kick, the accuracy and power of the shot meant that it hit the inside side netting, outside of his maximum reach.
And so, Levante, after publicising their desire to continue their good record against 'Los Blancos' in La Liga, gave themselves the best chance to win the match away from home.
This goal putting them 2-0 ahead within the fist twenty minutes of the encounter.
