Real Madrid: Midfielder Luka Modric has been included in the squad despite heavy speculation linking him with a move to Inter Milan. The latest instalment in the transfer saga came on Monday as the Croatian's agent insisted that his client would play in Serie A "sooner or later". Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could also make his debut after completing his move from Chelsea, though manager Julen Lopetegui is expected to keep faith with Keylor Navas on this occasion. Modric and Raphael Varane only returned to training last week after their World Cup exploits, but may be pressed into service in Estonia as Real look to claim the Madrid bragging rights.
Atletico Madrid: Atleti could hand debuts to new signings Thomas Lemar, Gelson Martins, Santiago Arias and returning hero Rodrigo, whilst former Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan is likely to start the game on the bench after he joined the club from Real Betis. World Cup-winning striker Antoine Griezmann should team up with Diego Costa in attack as Atleti look to lay down a marker that they are a force to be reckoned with this season.
Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui:
"My first official game is a final. A match that Real Madrid have earnt the right to play in once again. We’ll try to prepare very well for this match against a very strong opponent who will make it difficult, they’re a team we know well and it’ll be a local derby. It’s all set up to be a great match and a great final. This is how we will treat it and we will prepare for it. We’re delighted that our first match is this final.
"Winning is always the objective for all coaches. But more than thinking about what it would mean, we try to prepare ourselves to be able to win it. It’s what we’re focused on and what’s got our full attention.
"We will try to be a great team, strengthen the collective aspects and individual quality in order to benefit a collective idea and work towards that. We must have a clear and defined pattern that gets the best out of all the individual qualities that, without a doubt, the Real Madrid players have. In addition, these players have that mental extra which is required of players at the highest level. We’ll also try to take advantage of that."
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone:
"We want to improve on last season. Expectations are high and we know what’s demanded of us. We have a good squad and we’re working with the new players to be part of the group and incorporate them into it. There are new people in the dressing room, and we lost the likes of Fernando Torres and Gabi from there. We just go day to day, game to game.
"It was a tough pre-season. We were delighted that a lot of our players were in the World Cup final, but it also means they’ve come back later. That works well for us – Griezmann, Lucas and Lemar all come back as champions and they’ll have that desire to carry on winning.
"They’re (Real Madrid) going to play a different style, they press you high and want to control the game in your half. Lopetegui had this philosophy as Spain boss - it’s his philosophy and he’ll want to bring it to Madrid too."
Head-to-head record:
Atletico have had the worst of recent European meetings between the two sides, crashing out in the semi-finals 4-2 on aggregate in 2016/2017 as Cristiano Ronaldo's first-leg hat-trick proved too much for them to overturn at the Vicente Calderon. 'Los Blancos' also got the better of their city rivals in the final twice in three years as they claimed the title of European champions in both 2013/2014 and 2015/2016, either side of knocking Atleti out in the quarter-finals in a tense tie in 2014/15. The victory in 2014 came in the form of a remarkable turnaround from Real as they equalised in the final minute of stoppage time before romping to a 4-1 victory in extra time. The 2016 final was a tenser affair, with Real Madrid emerging victorious on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes of action.

This will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that two Spanish sides have contested the trophy.

Atletico Madrid have a 100% record in the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Inter Milan 2-0 in 2010 and Chelsea 4-1 in 2012 having won the Europa League the previous seasons.
A win will see Real Madrid move level with arch-rivals Barcelona and European heavyweights AC Milan with five wins in the competition, more than any other side.
Atletico will become the first team to win their first three UEFA Super Cups should they claim victory.
