Real Madrid reportedly ask to postpone Copa del Rey quarter-final

Carlo Ancelotti's men are now in the next round of the Copa del Rey. They won 1-2 at Elche and they are going strong in the cup competition.

But ahead of the quarter-finals, Real Madrid have a dilemma. They will be unable to field five players as they are South American World Cup qualifiers when the quarter-finals are taking place.

Madrid will be without Casemiro, Militao, Rodrygo and Vinicius as they have been selected by Brazil. They will also be unable to play Fede Valverde of Uruguay.

This is why, 'AS' reports that Real Madrid are speaking to the Spanish FA (RFEF). According to the newspaper, Madrid are asking to get their quarter-final tie away to Athletic Bilbao postponed as they understand it is not fair.

Real Madrid are apparently waiting for a response from the Federation. 'AS' even mentions that if the match is not postponed, the club will talk to the Brazilian FA (CBF) to see whether Brazil can release Real Madrid's four players after the first of their two games.

Brazil have already qualified for the World Cup so the La Liga side are hoping Brazil will accept their request. They will not try to speak to Uruguay because they are still fighting for a World Cup spot.

The ball is in the Spanish FA's court. Although, according to the competition's rules, games cannot be postponed due to international call-ups.

According to journalist Isaac Fouto, article 239.3 says: "In no case will clubs will be able to postpone a match for "force majeur" because footballlers are suspended, ill, injured or called up for their national teams."

That means Real Madrid are unlikely to be granted a postponement. In any case, the club are waiting for a response from the Spanish FA before making their next move. The club will definitely do everything in their power to try and get their players available.
