Real Madrid ask Modric to quit international football to renew

Real Madrid have got the contracts of three senior players in the team to renew. In June, Modric, Kroos and Benzema will see their contracts expire and there are doubts over the futures of the trio. Nevertheless, there is certain optimism over whether they wil stay. 

The Croatian midfielder has seen his form dip considerably since the World Cup in Qatar. It is not worth forgetting that he is 37 years old and that he will turn 38 in September. Real Madrid want him to stay, but under one condition. 

'Sport' says that Madrid asked Modric to quit international football with Croatia so that he can focus on his club. This is what Toni Kroos did after Euro 2020. The La Liga side what Modric to play consistently well and they want him to stay at the club until 2024. 

Ancelotti says he is trying to rest him on some occasions, but that is not actually proving to be the case. The Italian has only rested him on two occasions. They were both in the Copa del Rey against Cacereno and Villarreal. On another occasion, he was an unused substitute (against Shakhtar) while he missed two other matches due to a slight injury.

By way of comparison, Modric has played the same number of matches as Vinicius, the player who has played the most matches. Both have made 38 appearances including those played by their national teams. In terms of minutes played, the former Tottenham man has played the fourth most amount of minutes, just behind the Brazilian, Valverde and Courtois.

They are delighted with him at Real Madrid and they want him to stay for another year although he will not be short of offers. He received an offer from Saudi Arabia for 60 million euros net on a two season deal although he made it clear that he wants to retire as a Real Madrid player.
