The city of Seville is located in southern Spain and is home to two football teams: Real Betis and Sevilla. There is a huge rivalry between the two clubs in Spain's fourth largest city and the two meet this Sunday in Spain's La Liga. Kick off is at 21:00 CET. Like many derbies, Sevilla versus Real Betis is very hotly disputed. Tension comes to the fore both on and off the pitch in a city which sees temperatures reach in excess of 50 degrees in the summer.
Sevilla are located in the richer Nervion district of Seville and play at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium while Real Betis or 'Los Verdiblancos' (the green and whites) play in the Heliopolis region and are backed more by the working class. Their ground is the Benito Villamarin stadium. The two clubs are regulars in Spain's top flight and that has done nothing other than increase the fierce rivalry that exists between the two clubs.
On matchdays, the rivalry is plain to see and crowd trouble has been seen in the past. In a Copa del Rey clash between the two in 2007 at Betis, Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the crowd. He was knocked unconscious and the game was forced to be abandoned. Prior to a game in 2018, there was a large fight between the Biris (Sevilla's ultras) and Supporters (Betis' ultras) which led to 24 arrests. They are just two examples.
Inside the stadium, even if there is no violence, there are always insults traded between the two sets of supporters and plenty also happens on the pitch. Between 2009 and 2014, there was a run of seven red cards in seven meetings and overall, the number of red cards for each team is split reasonably equally.
As well as winning the points, it is about crowning the kings of the city. In Sevilla's club anthem there is reference to La Giralda (Sevilla's famous cathedral) standing proud watching Sevilla in action, but Betis supporters also have their say. In 2017, the English FA's Twitter mistakenly revealed England's squad to play in Betis instead of in Sevilla at Betis' ground. One Betis fan joked "It's City of Betis, not Betis" while "Even in England, Sevilla is green and white" and "Even in England they know who rules in Sevilla" were read in the comments.
This Sunday, the Seville derby takes place and just six points separate the sides. Sevilla are 4th on 48 points and have just been knocked out of the Champions League by Dortmund while Betis are 6th, but come into this one having won their last four. Who will win?
