English publication 'The Daily Mail' reports that Barca's technical director Robert Fernandez was present at the Allianz Arena for Leipzig's 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at the weekend as he cast his eye over Werner and Upamecano.
The Catalan side are thought to see the pair as long-term replacements for first-team stars Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique.
Upamecano is a strong, physical defender, who only joined the German side from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer for a fee of £8.8m, nevertheless he is highly rated in the footballing fraternity and has established himself in the Leipzig first-team in double-quick time since his move, starting 14 of 16 possible games so far this season, despite only recently turning 19.
Werner meanwhile is one of German football's worst-kept secrets, having scored 21 Bundesliga goals in 31 games last season and following that up with five in eight so far this season. The 21-year-old has established himself as the No 1 striker for 'Die Mannschaft' and expected to lead the line for Joachim Low's side at next summer's World Cup.
Barca's see the pair as ideal long-term successors for Pique and Suarez, who have both reached the dreaded 30 mark. The Uruguayan's form has left plenty to be desired so far this season, having scored just three goals in 13 games, whilst centre-back was identified early on by new boss Ernesto Valverde as an area that needs improvement.
