Jurgen Klopp lost Virgil van Dijk, his replacement Fabinho and Joe Gomez all to injury in a matter of weeks. That has forced Liverpool to look for a central defender in the January transfer market.
Many names have been mentioned, even that of Sergio Ramos. It is worth remembering that the Real Madrid captain has yet to renew his contract and it expires in the summer. The 'Express' says that the Reds are considering buying him.
But not everyone is in favour. Steve Nicol, an ex-Liverpool player between 1981 and 1995, is one of those. He told 'ESPN' that Ramos should not be the club's first choice.
"I don't wish to make this sound bad, but it depends how desperate they are. If Virgil van Dijk has a setback and it's going to take even longer, if Joe Gomez is struggling, you'd rather go for someone like Upamecano, at 21, who you're going to have for a decade. It's kind of a no-brainer. If you can't get him, then you kind of start going down the list," he said.
The former Scottish defender thinks Liverpool should look for a young defender and think about the future rather than a Ramos who is at the back end of his career. "You want a younger player who is going to be there for some time. If they got Ramos it would only be for a couple of seasons. I think he's on the wane a little, but it wouldn't be the worst signing ever, he would do a job," Nicol concluded.
