The 'Magpies' look for their first win of the season on Saturday as they take on Chris Hughton's Brighton, and in recent weeks Newcastle fans have been questioning the manager's team choices and substitutions.
Bruno claimed fans would turn on Newcastle's players if they went behind early-on at St James' Park, though Benitez has hit back at the Brighton defender.
Benitez commented: "The fans have something to prove, that Bruno is wrong. Bruno was saying the fans will get on top of the players, but one of our big strengths is our fans behind the team.
"‘If they see something wrong, they will still be supporting the team. The relationship between the players and the fans is strong.
"The fans realise the players will need support. If we are united like we have been for years, we can do well. Hopefully, the fans will give us confidence for the rest of the season."
Benitez also revealed he does not know how much of a budget he will be granted by owner Mike Ashley in January: "I was talking with Steve Nickson today, the head of recruitment, and not talking about January.
"I don't know my budget but it is not a problem. I'm used to working without big money in all my teams - not at Liverpool, Chelsea or even Real Madrid were we spending big money.
"We were still achieving something. I have confidence we will do it with this group of people, with this staff and these players.
"We can achieve what we want to achieve, which at the moment is to stay up."
