The Portugal international has 18 months left on his current deal and recently took to Instagram to tell Southampton fans that he had not been offered a new deal by the club, after it was reported that he had rejected the offer of a new contract.
Fonte is yet to play for Southampton in the Europa League this season, and many are suggesting that this is due to the club's wish to sell the defender in January. However, Saints boss Claude Puel has denied these rumours.
"It's not true, about not playing so he can move in January," he said.
"We prepare for an important game and for me it is only important to speak about the team and the game - other things concerning individuals is not part of the collective or important for me - about Jose or not".
Puel was then asked about Fonte's absence from the Europa League sides that have played, something which the Frenchman played down once again.
"He would have played against Sparta (Prague) but he had an injury.
"I am happy and satisfied about Maya Yoshida and we are lucky to have good centre backs in this team.
"The others deserve game time as well. It's all about balance with the other players. It's important to consider all the team".
Fonte has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, while Everton are also reportedly interested.
