PSG wins the Ligue title again. They also win on budget and money spent on players, so anything other than taking the title by crushing all other rivals, as happened again, would have been surprising to football fans in France. And so it happened.
However, the title win was delayed by its fair share of strange occurrences and unexpected results. After three unsuccessful attempts, a draw against Strasbourg and two defeats against Lille and Nantes on Wednesday, it was the second-placed Toulouse side's goalless draw that made them Champions, four hours before their league clash against Monaco.
There is, however, a consolation prize for winning it later than expected. The team will be to celebrate the title in their home stadium, the Park of Princes, and on a special day: with the return of Cavani and Neymar to reunite the three star players of the team, who were so decisive during the season and helped achieve the Ligue 1 title. Aditionally, the title win will be celebrated with designed shirt in homage to Notre Dame after the tragic fire in the cathedral days ago.
Despite their final hiccups, it was clear the Parisian team was going to win as soon as the first third of competition ended. 12 rounds and 12 victories. With that start, the best ever seen in the history of the competition, the Ligue 1 was in their pocket. By then, they had 41 goals scored, seven conceded and eleven points ahead of the second and third teams.
Round 33 saw the eighth title of the team's history. It is the sixth in this decade, a fact that reinforces the change of cycle and the tyranny that the Parisians are exerting in Ligue 1.
Since the wasted game against Strasbourg, the title was resisting Tuchel's team, who could have been the first champion of the five major leagues, an honor that was taken by Juventus on Saturday.
The best amongst a disappointing league
Beyond the amazing attack and France's best squad, Monaco's disappointing season also helped them achieve the title along with Olympique Marseille, a team that's more than 30 points away from the champions.
The final scenario, with Neymar and Cavani injured, further accentuates Mbappé's dominance in this PSG. His emergence is definitive. He was again the most differential player in Ligue 1 and showed a goal dictatorship that is only surpassed by Messi.
As the title became a matter of finding mathematical certification, it was left in the background, although the surprise elimination of the Champions League put the focus back on it.
The problems to find a substitute for Rabiot, who was left aside most of the season because of his refusal to renew his contract, were the only stain in an otherwise amazing season domestically. And the team is not looking like it will get any weaker in the coming years, which could mean even more trouble for other French clubs.
