FC Porto progressed to the quarter finals after an extra time VAR penalty converted by Alex Telles on an eventful night in Porto.
Sergio Conceicao's side were the better team on the night and their positive attitude on the night ended up being rewarded. Porto started quickly out of the blocks and had various chances in the opening 20 minutes. First, Corona hit a volley from outside the box wide of the goal, then Telles struck the side netting in the 10th minute after Corona's initial effort was blocked. Porto clearly spotted a weakness down Roma's right and the majority of the attacks came from the near side.
Five minutes before Porto took the lead, Corona had a pop from 25 yards out, but the Mexican's shot went just over the bar. Porto scored through Tiquinho Soares, but it was not without controversy. Marega may have fouled Manolas in the build up, but it got the all clear from the VAR. Corona found Marega inside the box, who then squared for Soares to toe poke home from inside the six yard box.
Roma then came out to attack and were rewarded ten minutes later. Perotti made a good run into the box and he was brougnt down by Militao. Daniele De Rossi made no mistake from the spot, sending Casillas the wrong way from the spot and putting the visitors back in front overall.
In the second half, Porto dominated once again and Marega levelled up the tie just a few minutes after the interval. Corona put in an excellent ball and Marega ran onto the pass to beat Olsen from point-blank range. Porto kept attacking and tried their very best to make it 3-1 in normal time, but they were denied by an excellent Olsen who made two or three top saves.
The first half of extra time was very quiet. Apart from one chance for Marega which was hit over the bar, there was very little chance of a goal. Roma had definitely decided to play for penalties, but their strategy changed completely in the second period. Roma decided to go out on the attack and Dzeko had two great chances to win it. The second one of them saw him one on one with Casillas, he lobbed him, but Maxi Pereira got back to clear off the goalline.
The turning point came four minutes from the end of normal time when Florenzi pulled back Andrade. After a pitchside review, Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir awarded a penalty to Porto and Telles made no mistake from 12 yards.
Even after Porto had scored, the Italians did not give up and even could have had a penalty of their own although the VAR rightly deemed it not to be a penalty. After 125 minutes of a topsy-turvy tie and a nervy finish, the referee finally blew his whistle and it was the Portuguese side who went home the victors.
