England and Switzerland were playing for third place in the inaugural Nations League and, after a game in which England dominated but failed to take their chances, the match went to penalties.
Step forward, Jordan Pickford. A year on from becoming a national hero in England's shootout win against Colombia at the World Cup, the 'Three Lions' needed Pickford to step up once again in Portugal. And step up he did.
After five perfect penalties from each team, and to the surprise of the whole stadium in Guimaraes, Pickford strolled up to take England's vital sixth penalty. The Everton keeper struck his effort perfectly into the bottom right corner, giving Yann Sommer no chance as he went the wrong way.
Josep Drmic then stepped up, but Pickford read him like a book and tipped his penalty around the post to secure England third spot. With this save, he also became the first English goalkeeper in history to score and save a penalty in the same shootout.
