Pickford could have damaged Van Dijk's ligaments after making a very bad challenge on the defender during the Premier League game between Everton and Liverpool. It is not the first time he has done that. He did the same to Dele Alli in a game versus Tottenham in December 2018.
A former Spurs player, Ryan Mason, mentioned it in a tweet on his official Twitter account. "I've just seen Pickford's tackle. He could have ended someone's career. Terrible, terrible challenge! He's done it before and he'll do it again!," he said.
And he was not the only one. Several ex-players, who now work as pundits, were very angry with the goalkeeper's challenge. The referee did not even issue a yellow card.
"It's a horrendous challenge, he could have broken his leg. If that happens in the middle of the pitch, it's a straight red card," Peter Crouch said. "It's an absolutely horrible challenge and we don't want to see that in a match. It's a challenge which can ruin someone's career," Leon Osman said.
