Despite being third in the pecking order for Italy's goalkeeper, Genoa's Mattia Perin was still hoping to travel with his country to the Euro's this summer.
The 23-year-old, who is behind Gianluigi Buffon and Salvatore Sirigu in the national team pecking order, went to the 2014 World Cup, but only made his international debut in a 1-0 friendly victory over Albania a few months later.
It looks like his hopes of turning out for his country in the tournament are now over, with his club releasing the following statement.
"Genoa communicate that the medical exams on Mattia Perin revealed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament with implications for the meniscus of the right knee."
"Tomorrow, on Wednesday April 13, Perin will be operated by Professor Pier Paolo Mariani at the Villa Stuart clinic."
